Description: In light of the significant damage in the state of North Carolina caused by the storm surge from Hurricane Florence on September 14, 2018, concerns about the vulnerability of the coastal communities on the Atlantic coast of Maryland and in Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay have come into focus. This project seeks to replicate the storm surge heights seen with Hurricane Florence, to determine a what-if scenario in coastal Maryland.METHODOLOGYInland County Analysis:USGS Station Observations provide the flood statistic: 10.41ft.Stations evaluated:USGS 02092576 TRENT RIVER AT US HIGHWAY 70 AT NEW BERN, NCUSGS 0209270825 BOGUE SOUND AT SR 1182 AT ATLANTIC BEACH, NCUSGS 02092712 BOGUE SOUND AT NC HIGHWAY 58 AT EMERALD ISLE, NCUSGS 0209303201 NEW RIVER AT OLD BRIDGE STREET AT JACKSONVILLE, NCUSGS 02093206 INTRACOASTAL WTRWY AT NC HWY50/210 AT SURF CITY,NCUSGS 02093222 BANKS CHANNEL AT US HWY 74 WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NCUSGS 0210869230 NE CAPE FEAR R AT US HWY 74/133 AT WILMINGTON, NCStation collection process (based on Lat-Long box):https://www.weather.gov/lmrfc/climate_riverdataSelect link: “US Geological Survey archived data”Click North Carolina for all NC stationsUnder Statewide Streamflow Table, select “Build Time Series”Under Choose Site Selection Criteria-Site Location, select “Lat-Long box”, submitBounding box:Nags head (NE) 35.9206021,-75.6865208NW 35.9206021,-78.9488473SE 33.7198685, -75.6865208Myrtle Beach (SW) 33.7198685,-78.9488473Coordinates in decimal degreesSelect single parameter : “Estuary or ocean water surface elevation above NAVD 1988, ft”Data range: 9/11/18-9/18/18For max value, select output as tableUsing station numberOn station’s home page, under “available data for this site”, select location map to extract lat-long and time-series data as needed Data from the USGS river archives downloaded asa.gz.
